In my build strategy, all things that bolt through the roof or otherwise involves holes in the roof need to be completed first. This will allow me to insulate and finish the roof top with my yet to be decided veneer. Once the roof is finished and trimmed, it will take considerable work to re-access the roof top from inside the van requiring careful planning.
The first piece to go in was the vent which is positioned relatively near my galley to vent whatever I decide to burn on my stove top. The vent is also important to control humidity within the van while sleeping at night. The human body gives off a lot of vapor and if that isn't allowed out in this small space, it will condense somewhere on or near the walls of the van making for a soggy ride on cold nights.
I bet you're wondering about cutting a 14" by 14" hole in the roof of a perfectly fine automobile. It was incredibly difficult for me. I measured maybe 15 times and checked my lines for square another 10 times. Once I was ready to drill a pilot hole for the saw, that took me about 7 minutes to gain the courage necessary to get started.

The end result was perfect. And now I have loads more courage. Onwards!!!!
